Education Programs & Initiatives

Web-based Interview Skills Workshop

Our annual Virtual Interview Skills Workshop prepares U.S. residency applicants for one of the most critical steps in their career journey—the residency interview. Participants take part in mock interviews followed by individualized feedback on their performance. In addition, the workshop covers practical tips on preparing for interview day and navigating post-interview expectations. Over the past two decades, this workshop has supported hundreds of applicants, and we are proud to continue offering it for the 20th consecutive year.

SAMS Observership Connection Program (OCP)

The SAMS Observership Connection Program provides international medical students and graduates with valuable clinical learning experiences across a variety of specialties. Through the generosity of participating physicians, students gain exposure to the U.S. medical system, strengthen their clinical skills, and explore diverse fields of medicine—all while learning from experienced mentors dedicated to their growth. SAMS Scholarship Program

The SAMS Scholarship Program offers financial assistance in the form of interest-free loans to Syrian medical graduates pursuing U.S. residency applications. This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to support applicants thoughout this critical process and reducing financial barriers for students in need. [Link]

Residency Application Review Program

Through the Residency Application Review Program, applicants are paired with senior mentors from a wide range of specialties. These volunteer physicians review CVs and personal statements, providing detailed feedback and highlighting key areas for improvement. Their contributions are instrumental in helping applicants strengthen their applications and improve their chances of success.

Applicant Support Program

The Applicant Support Program is another program led by the Education Committee aiming at making mentee-mentor connections between Syrian residency applicants and practicing physicians/residents within the US. Through this collaborative effort, we have been able to make meaningful connections, helping our applicants move closer to securing residency positions. The dedication of our attendings and the enthusiasm of the applicants have been pivotal to the success of this program.

ERAS Residency Application Webinars

The Education Committee hosts live webinars focused on the ERAS residency application, offering applicants practical tips and insights in an interactive, open-discussion format. Participants have the opportunity to ask real-time questions and receive guidance from experienced physicians and mentors. These webinars complement our individualized application review program, providing applicants with both personalized feedback and broader, community-based support.

Residency Essentials Bootcamp

The Residency Essentials Bootcamp is a two-day program designed to support incoming residents as they transition into this pivotal stage of their careers. The bootcamp equips participants with practical strategies for success, offering guidance on how to maximize their residency experience, build strong professional habits, and avoid common pitfalls. Through this initiative, the Education Committee aims to empower new residents with the tools and confidence they need to thrive from day one.

Educational Outreach Through YouTube

Our YouTube channel has experienced steady growth, now reaching more than 7.2k followers, and has become a valuable resource for residency applicants. We regularly share educational videos that cover key aspects of the residency application process, including step-by-step guides on completing the ERAS application. Many of these videos, particularly those offered in Arabic, have attracted hundreds of views and provide essential guidance as applicants navigate the challenges of securing residency positions. The channel’s continued success underscores our commitment to offering accessible and impactful educational content to our community.[Link]

Poster Presentation Session at the SAMS Damascus Conference
For the First Time in Syria: Launch of the Research Poster Exhibition at the 23rd SAMS International Conference!

Damascus witnessed the inauguration of the very first Research Poster Exhibition, held as part of the 23rd Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) International Conference—a milestone event that reflects SAMS’ commitment to advancing scientific research and empowering medical professionals in Syria and the region.

We received nearly 200 research abstracts, including 172 submissions from inside Syria. Following a rigorous and competitive review process, 60 research posters were selected:

Most notably, 51 of these projects came from researchers inside Syria—a remarkable testament to the growing passion for research and academic excellence.

SAMS One-Day Young Professionals Conference – A Historic First in Syria

As part of the 23rd International Conference of the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), Damascus proudly hosted the first-ever SAMS Young Professionals Conference on July 3rd, 2025, at Damascus University – School of Medicine, Rida Said Conference Center.

This milestone event, presented by the SAMS Young Professionals and Education Committees, brought together medical students, residents, and fellows from Syria and abroad to explore pathways to success in medicine and research.

With over 400 students in attendance, the full-day program featured expert-led sessions, inspiring stories, and interactive workshops, offering participants practical tools and valuable networking opportunities. With a focus on global health, humanitarian medicine, and career development, the conference reflected SAMS’ ongoing commitment to supporting the next generation of medical leaders.
